Hawaiian Parties - 5 Costume Ideas For a Hawaiian Costume

Bring the ambiance of the tropics to your next party by incorporating Hawaiian costumes into the festivities. Luaus and other seaside shindigs are all so much better when the guests are suited up to reflect the easy, breezy, fun-in-the-sun atmosphere. Don't worry about bulky, hot and hard-to-wear outfits, island-inspired costumes are usually quite cool and comfy by definition. Everyone in the whole family, mom, dad, the kids and even the dog are sure to make waves in some of following Hawaiian costumes.

Gory Halloween Decorations

Polynesian Dancers: Both guys and girls can dress up as hula dancers and luau performers that shake their hips and stomp their feet to the beat of thumping drums. Hula dancer costumes for women typically feature a real or faux grass skirt and a bikini top, sometimes a coconut shell bra top is worn instead to further the island image. Other embellishments for your Hula costume are shell and palm frond necklaces, bracelets, anklets and headpieces. A Polynesian dance costume for men would feature a loincloth along with the many wrist and ankle embellishments. Of course, both genders wearing a luau costume should layer on lies, the beautiful plumeria flower necklaces that are symbolic of the island.

Surfers: If you walk any beach on the islands, you'll see plenty of surfers riding the big waves. This laid-back lifestyle has been the inspiration for many surfer costumes that consist of a pair of floral print swim trunks, a long dreadlocked wig and a Hawaiian lieu or shark-tooth necklace. Dude, if you're going to step out in a surfer costume, don't forget to rub on a tan from a bottle. A surfer costume can also take the form of a wet suit and board. Hang ten!

Tourists: Tourists costumes are always a funny choice when you're looking for a Hawaiian costume. You'll have lots of inspiration for a tourist costume; visitors to the Hawaiian Islands number over 7 million per year. The stereotypical look for a tourist costume is a loud, Hawaiian shirt paired with shorts, sandals with socks, and a big sun hat. Women have the choice to wear a big, floral Mumu dress and a giant hibiscus bloom in their hair. Don't forget to add a camera strapped around your neck, an unfurled map and perhaps even a faux red sunburn.

Magnum PI: Actor Tom Selleck's portrayal of Thomas Magnum, a private investigator living in Oahu, is always a fun Hawaiian costume. While this show aired during the 80s, everyone still knows about this red-Ferrari driving character. A Magnum PI costume is easy to put together; you just need a pair of jeans, colorful Aloha shirt and a Detroit Tigers baseball cap. Also requisite for the look is a big, faux mustache parked under your nose.

Shark Attack: A creative idea for a Hawaiian outfit is a shark attack costume. While shark attacks are actually quite rare, they have been sensationalized in pop culture. Make light of these gruesome encounters with a humorous costume that features a big foam shark that features your heat sticking out of the jaws - to be really gory, squirt on some tubes of fake blood found in a costume shop.

Dark Lord and Other Scary Halloween Costume Ideas

Dark Lord costumes and other scary Halloween costume ideas. When You hear Dark Lord Costume, who do you think of? I know two villains who fit the profile. One is from the Star Wars movies and the other from Harry Potter.

Gory Halloween Decorations

Now you know which Dark Lords I am referring to, don't you. The most evil villain from Star Wars is, of course, the dark Sith Lord, Darth Vader. Once a Jedi knight himself, Darth fell to the Dark Side of the force, losing all that was once dear to him. He became, slowly, a half man half machine, who lost complete touch with his humanity. Fierce and Scary as he is, he sure makes a great Halloween costume!

Gory Halloween Decorations

There is one costume of the Dark Sith, Lord Vader, that actually has the breathing device is in it. This Star Wars Collector's Darth Vader Costume and costs way more than I would spend, but the costume is made from the same material and patterns from Lucas Studios as the costumes worn by the actors when they filmed Star Wars. So it's got to be a pretty nice looking costume. There are, thank goodness, other versions of the Darth Vader costume, that are more affordable. You can also buy all kinds of accessories to go with your costume to make it more real.

Now, who did you think of when I said Dark Lord...was it he who cannot be named? Yes, of course, I mean Lord Voldemort...Tom Riddle, evil soul-less villain from the Harry Potter movies. The monster who killed James and Lily Potter and attempted to kill little infant Harry. You can become the Dark Lord for Halloween this year.

Why do we always like the scary costumes? I don't know, but I know it's true! There is a Female Death Eater Bellatrix costume too, for those girls who want to be scary this year. There is a dementor costume as well.

Take a look at our Dark Lord Costumes, which ever one you choose. Try not to scare too many people while you are out trick or treating!

Need Help With Twilight Party Ideas?

Do you need Twilight Party Ideas? Whether you are planning a Twilight party for your Birthday, for Halloween or for a Movie Review, there are plenty of fun ideas to make it the best!

Gory Halloween Decorations

The color scheme is easy...red and black. Throw in splashes of white to brighten your room up and include some twinkle lights. If you remember, in the books, every party that Alice Cullen planned had tons of twinkle lights. Using apples, chess pieces, red satin ribbon and lots of sparkles will make your party room look like one of the Saga book covers. You can use the book covers as additional decorations and you can frame some pictures of the movie cast in character, so it looks like they live there. Find a company that will make you an edible image for your party cake and use it to decorate your cake.

Gory Halloween Decorations

A Birthday party is such a special occasion for the Birthday girl or guy. The celebration of another year passing, and another year to look forward to, with a gathering of friends who care is one of the best nights of the year. Plus you will probably get some birthday presents! Yeah! Now, that's always fun. If you are having a Twilight theme I'm sure you are just like me and talk Twilight nonstop. Hope everyone is smart enough to figure out what kind of gifts you want! There are so many different ideas: The books, the movie, the soundtrack and of course, there is always some Cullen Crest jewelry, any of which would be the perfect birthday present!

The Twilight Halloween party ideas are probably the most fun. Halloween is perfect for a vampire party, even if those vampires happen to be vegetarians. Invite some of the Vultori to come if you are looking for some gorier guests than the Cullen Clan. Stephanie Meyer has given us a multitude of costume ideas with the book characters. You can go as Bella, Alice or Jane! There are also loads of couples costume and group costume ideas. Go as the entire Cullen family or as the Italian, red eyed Vultori. Don't forget the nomads, Laurent, James and Victoria for a scarier vampire look. Use crest name tags, perhaps written in Edward's beautiful handwriting, so everyone knows exactly who you are. The name of the font Edward uses is Camilla and can be found on different sites online.

A Movie Review party is the ideal way to watch the movie as soon as it is released on DVD! Invite your friends over for a casual movie viewing. You don't have to go crazy with a party menu since Movie Night parties are usually a pizza and popcorn deal. You can put some red food coloring in your melted butter if you feel like making some theme colored popcorn. Of course, if you want to serve a more involved menu, go ahead...I'm sure no one will complain if there is lots of delicious food and desserts waiting for them!

An easy vampire themed cupcake idea is ...vampire cupcakes. You can use any color cake mix, though red velvet does look great, with some white icing. Using a red gel decorating tube you make two small puncture marks, close together so it looks like a vampire bite mark. Leave a little red trail when you pull the gel tube out. These are so easy to make and really look perfect...without being gory! Perfect for a gathering with a clan as sophisticated as the Cullens.

Any party needs some fun party games...so make up some trivia questions...they are perfect for this theme. There is so much information in the novels you can use, and it's all so easy to find. Just look in the book. Or check out New Moon, Eclipse or Breaking Dawn for some more difficult, but good questions and answers to try and stump your guests with. Which ever party theme you ultimately decide on, you are sure to have a fun party when you use the Twilight Movie or Books as your theme. Create an atmosphere of fun with your vampire romance theme and use everything Stephanie has given us in the books to ensure your party is a success!

History of Valentine's Day

No one knows the true origin of Valentine's Day. There are several legends surrounding the history of this annual, love filled celebration. From Pagan Days to Ancient Rome to modern times myth and mystery shroud one of America's favorite holidays.

Gory Halloween Decorations

One theory of the origination of Valentine's Day focuses on an ancient pagan festival. Legend tells of an annual celebration, during which priests sacrificed animals, which were then butchered. Men would slap women with strips of the meat dipped in the sacrificial blood as it was believed this would make the women more fertile. Following this barbaric ritual the women's names would be placed in a bucket, randomly drawn and paired with the men. If the match was a success, each mate would wear the name of their new lover on the sleeve of their shirt for one week, publicly declaring their betrothal by wearing their heart on their sleeve. How romantic!

Gory Halloween Decorations

In an effort to end this pagan festival, the Pope and the Catholic Church created their own feast and festival around 500 AD, on February 14th, officially declaring St. Valentine's Day. Even this part of Valentine history is obscure because the Catholic Church had named three saints 'St. Valentine' prior to 500 A.D. Curiously, all three of these saints are said to have been martyred on February 14th. Most scholars believe the true 'St. Valentine' was a priest named Valentine who lived around 270 AD. At that time, Roman soldiers were prohibited from marrying because the emperor believed bachelors made better soldiers. A priest named Valentine is said to have secretly married hundreds of soldiers and their lovers. Valentine was apprehended by Rome, jailed, and later put to death. Before his death it is said he fell in love with the jailer's daughter, to whom he penned love letters and poems, signed "love, your Valentine".

Over the centuries Valentines Day has evolved. By the 14th century lovers were exchanging handmade cards in England and France. These cards were made of lace, ribbon and colorful papers. The switch from handmade to manufactured cards came in the mid-1800s, which was the same time that Valentine's Day greeting cards became popular in the U.S. American Esther A. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap". She sold these cards and eventually they became so popular that they were printed for mass distribution.

During the American Civil War, homesick and love struck soldiers sent Valentine Cards from the battlefield. Harpers Weekly even published a special Valentines Days greeting page in 1861 celebrating the Valentine tradition. Harper's Weekly was the most popular newspaper during the Civil War, and it featured stunning illustrations, and in depth stories on all the important people and events of the war. Recognizing that many soldiers sent letters and cards, handwritten themselves or by fellow soldiers, to their sweethearts back home who some wouldn't see for years on end during the war, Harper's weekly celebrated undying love on Valentines Day during the Civil War with a special edition devoted to soldiers' love. Most Civil War soldiers bought Valentine Cards from the sutlery, who in addition to carrying supplies of boots and weapons, also sold stationery and greeting cards. Here's an example of a beautiful Civil War era Valentine titled 'MY LOVE':

'Mid bugle's blast and cannon's roar,

And 'mid the battles angry flame;

'Mid clashing sabres red with gore,

I fondly breathe they much-loved name.

I feel thee near at dead of night,

When I my vigil lone am keeping.

Thy image guards me, angel bright,

In dreams when wearied I am sleeping,

Each northward wind wafts on its breath,

To thee a yearning kiss of mine.

On glory's field or bed of death,

I live or die thy Valentine.

What would Valentines Day be without a loving phone call to your mother? It's interesting to note that this wouldn't be possible without a telephone, the patent for which was filed by Alexander Graham Bell on February 14th, 1876.

At the turn of the Century, during Victorian times, everything became more prudish - including Valentine's Day. Post offices began scrutinizing Valentines. As many as 25,000 cards every Valentines Day during this period were destroyed by the Chicago postmaster because they were deemed too racy.

Today, 25% of all greetings cards sent are Valentines. This year that means over 1 billion cards will be given on Valentine's Day. Whether you believe Valentines Day originated with the Pagans or the Catholic Church, remember that Valentine's Day is the day to celebrate love. Love for each other and love for ourselves.

5 of the Best Villain Costumes of All Time (And the Heroes to Fend Them Off)

Everyone secretly likes to be the bad guy (or girl). There's just something about the feeling of danger. Maybe it's that evil laugh or the mystery behind it all. Whatever it is, people flock to disguise themselves as the evil villain.

Gory Halloween Decorations

Want to be the best (or worst) rogue at the costume party? Check out these top five villains (and if you can recruit someone to dress up as the heroes they battle, you're in for some dramatic tension at the party).

Gory Halloween Decorations

5) Child's Party Villains. Starting off on a slightly tamer note, you might notice kid's movies are chock full of wicked villains. Interestingly enough, the women were usually the bad ones. Hmm, maybe the Grimm Brothers were on to something. Dress up for this one as the Wicked Queen of Snow White fame. You can carry a magic mirror and look sublimely beautiful, until you realize that you are not in fact the fairest one of all. Get your lovely daughter to dress up as Snow White and maybe even bring along a bunch of dwarves.

4) Teen Villains. If your crowd is slightly older, look beyond fairy tales. Still riding high in popularity, Harry Potter fought his share of bad guys and Lord Voldemort was the ickiest. That nose might be hard to duplicate, but the snarling would be fun. Dress up a crew of Harrys, Hermoines and the rest of gang to battle your evilness.

3) Blood and Guts Villains. Go gory and transform yourself into Freddy Krueger of Nightmare on Elm Street. Still able to keep people up at night, Freddy's reign of terror may never end. Any normal teen can be the hero for this one, just make sure they can scream loud and stay awake. And tell them to stay away from water beds.

2) Surprising Villains. Want to creep people out with your hidden dark side? Don't overlook the simple and shocking evil of Norman Bates from Pyscho. A perfect study in contrasts, this costume can be simple and yet oh, so scary. Bring along his mom or just an innocent hotel guest or two to chop up. Find a large butcher knife before you go.

1) The Ultimate Villain. If you want bad, look no further than the Devil himself. This can be as easy or elaborate as you wish. But remember to be smooth and always prone to tempting those around you. Angels are the traditional hero against Satan, but be creative and expand beyond. We all know the Devil will lose in the end.

Work the evil side of you and choose a villain that's dripping with personality. You're sure to be the life (or is that death?) of the party.

Low Cost and Easy Homemade Costumes For Children

You can save some money by making a low cost and easy homemade costumes this year for Halloween. Instead of buying or renting a costume for your kids, or yourself, make one. Let your children help you, let them see what goes into making a costume, it will be fun for them and you and at the same time it will teach them a valuable lesson.

Gory Halloween Decorations

Easy Homemade Costume Ideas

Gory Halloween Decorations

Of course, the usual scary Halloween themes include lots of dead creatures, Zombies, Vampires and Ghouls or Monsters...The puppet from Saw, Texas Chainsaw Mask, Darth Vader or Frankenstein. Creatures from the otherworld roam the night, the Werewolves, Witches and Demons.

Get Out Those Old Sheets

Of course we also see, each Halloween, hundreds of sheet creatures, Ghosts. Kids dressed up in sheets with arm and eyes cutouts. and the most important cutout of all...the mouth, so they can eat some candy! An old sheet and a little imagination plus the tools of the costume season...fabric paint, costume makeup, pens, markers and lipsticks add a little creativity to the most simple homemade Halloween costume. Treat bags made out of old pillowcases work out just fine too.

Not every ghost is white...you can add color with your markers or patches to add a little bit of a unique design to the standard ghost outfit. Black and orange are the perfect accent colors since they are the standard colors of Halloween. Why not make your ghost look as good as you can!

Which Witch?

Witch costumes are another easy homemade costume to make in a hurry. Fabric cut into a large circle, cutouts for the head and arms work like magic to costume your little Witch. The most important part of the Witch costume is the hat. Everyone can immediately recognize a Witch by her hat. You can buy this most important costume feature at your local costume store, or online at one of the costume web sites. Or you can take on the challenge of making a witch's hat yourself. A homemade Witch hat consists of two parts. The brim and the cone and you can make both from card board. Make sure they are glued well so they last through the rigors Halloween trick or treating is going to put them through.

Witch masks are available, but green face paint can work even better. Get some body safe costume makeup glue and fasten a corn flake to your child's face...that's how you make a costume wart. Give this Witch a glam look or you can easily turn it into a very fashionable Gothic Witch costume with some white, black and gray costume makeup. You can go any way you like with the lips...make them a dark color or bright red. You've got a broomstick at your house, or you can find a Witchy looking one at the local craft store. The craft store broom is likely to be smaller than a household tool, and that will be the safest bet. Now all you need is the candy bag, so this Witch can go and fill it up with Halloween goodies!

Scary Homemade Costumes

Ghouls, Zombies and Skeletons are all very easy homemade costume ideas. Start out with a pair of black overalls or sweats with a long sleeve black top. Paint bones onto the clothing with some fabric paint or cut out bone shapes from white paper and glue them onto the outfit. Glow in the dark paint will add a spooky look to this scary costume. Use an old pillow case for your skeleton's head or get out my favorite thing...the Halloween costume makeup again. White colored hair spray will change your child's lovely hair into a ghostly or ghoulish head. White makeup with dark accents will finish off the look. Ghouls and Zombies bring us back to that Gothic Costume look. Use old clothes for these outfits, make them raggedy looking, torn or patched to get that real look...dark colors and the black, gray and white make up combo again. Gothic costume face painting usually begins with a very white makeup applied all over the face and neck area.

Gryffindor? What's Gryffindor?

Wizard costumes are hot this year thanks to Harry Potter. The Gryffindor logo, scarf and tie are super hot sellers so far this early in the season. An old bathrobe can easily be turned into a Wizards robe, and it's all the better if this robe has a hood. If not you will have to make a Wizards hat from card board or buy one at your local costume store. A magic wand is easy to make with a dowel or a stick and some star shaped paper cutouts. Paint the stick white, gold or silver and make the star glitter. Some Wizards have beards, some don't. Harry and the students at Hogwarts don't. So if you are making a young Wizard's costume, you won't need the facial hair. If you have any rope or drape tassels you can use them as a belt...and of course you will need a treat bag. Find some Gryffindor clip art to make that Gryffindor logo for your homemade costume. Or find a design with snakes to make it a Slitherin house costume.

Time To Choose A Homemade Costume Theme

There are so many fun ways to make an easy homemade Halloween costume for your child or for yourself. It only takes a little bit of imagination to come up with some really interesting and fun costume accessories too. So have fun designing, making and watching your children dress up this year in homemade costumes. It's a great family project and you know your gang will have the most unique kids costumes out in the trick or treat routes.
